A Rootkit for Christmas from Sony / BMG

In this post I am going to do my best not to rant ... it may be impossible.
This last week it has been discovered that Sony Music, as part of it's Digital Rights Management, has been including Rootkit Technology in all CDs with DRM. The Rootkit is installed on a computer system automatically when a consumer puts a music CD in the CDrom to play the music. The music will only play after Sony's proprietary music player is installed.
This in it's self was not a concernn in the past, because a proprietary player was a form of advertising for the music company and the player was compatable with many other file forms.
Sony has now changed all of that .
The files that are loaded with the music are a true Rootkit. They are stealthy, (can't be seen as a running process) they actively hide from any process that would reveal there presence. (call hooking)
This Rookit was discovered by accident when a program called "Rootkit Revealer" was run on a system that was thought to be free of spyware , scumware, and malware. The genesis of this discovery can be found at this link.
For a truely in depth view of what all this means to a music consumer , please got to this link to hear a Podcast about Sony's Rootkit. Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson The Podcast will download.
Now that you have heard and seen all of the information , I urge you to avoid all of Sony's music with DRM. Do not play this stuff on your computer. Do not try to make backup copies of these music CD's. The CD will screwup your windows computer with a Rootkit. (it does not work very well anyway .... the code is poorly written . Blue Screen of Death is a common problem)
